A vulnerability was found in Apple Mac OS X 10.8.5 (Operating System). It has been rated as critical. This issue affects an unknown code of the component Font Parser. Buffer underflow in CoreGraphics in Apple Mac OS X before 10.9 allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code or cause a denial of service (application crash) via a crafted PDF document.

The weakness was released 04/22/2014 by Will Dormann with CERT/CC as HT6207 as confirmed advisory (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at support.apple.com. The public release was coordinated with Apple. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2013-5170 since 08/15/2013. The exploitation is known to be difficult. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available. The advisory points out:

Opening a maliciously crafted PDF file may result in an unexpected application termination or arbitrary code execution

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 70561 (Mac OS X 10.x < 10.9 Multiple Vulnerabilities (BEAST)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family MacOS X Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 122028 (Apple Mac OS X Security Update 2014-002 Not Installed (HT6207)).

Applying the patch Security Update 2014-002 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at support.apple.com. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. The advisory contains the following remark:

This issue was addressed through additional bounds checking. This issue does not affect OS X Mavericks systems.
