Heimdal, as used in Apple OS X through 10.9.2, allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (abort and daemon exit) via ASN.1 data encountered in the Kerberos 5 protocol.

The weakness was disclosed 04/22/2014 by Joonas Kuorilehto with Codenomicon as HT6207 as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is shared for download at support.apple.com. The public release has been coordinated in cooperation with the vendor. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2014-1316 since 01/08/2014. The exploitability is told to be difficult. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available. The advisory points out:

A reachable abort existed in the handling of ASN.1 data.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 73648 (Mac OS X Multiple Vulnerabilities (Security Update 2014-002)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family MacOS X Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 122028 (Apple Mac OS X Security Update 2014-002 Not Installed (HT6207)).

Applying the patch Security Update 2014-002 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at support.apple.com. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. The advisory contains the following remark:

This issue was addressed through additional validation of ASN.1 data.
