Details
A vulnerability was found in Apple Mac OS X up to 10.7.5/10.8.5/10.9.2 (Operating System). It has been declared as critical. Affected by this vulnerability is an unknown code block of the component Ruby. The manipulation as part of a Float Object leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
Heap-based buffer overflow in Ruby 1.8, 1.9 before 1.9.3-p484, 2.0 before 2.0.0-p353, 2.1 before 2.1.0 preview2, and trunk before revision 43780 allows context-dependent attackers to cause a denial of service (segmentation fault) and possibly execute arbitrary code via a string that is converted to a floating point value, as demonstrated using (1) the to_f method or (2) JSON.parse.
The weakness was shared 04/22/2014 as HT6207 as confirmed advisory (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at support.apple.com. The vendor cooperated in the coordination of the public release. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2013-4164 since 06/12/2013. The exploitation appears to be difficult. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available. The advisory points out:
Running a Ruby script that uses untrusted input to create a Float object may lead to an unexpected application termination or arbitrary code execution
It is possible to download the exploit at packetstormsecurity.com. It is declared as highly functional. We expect the 0-day to have been worth approximately $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 71472 (Slackware 13.1 / 13.37 / 14.0 / 14.1 / current : ruby (SSA:2013-350-06)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Slackware Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 195876 (Ubuntu Security Notification for Ruby1.8, Ruby1.9.1 Vulnerabilities (USN-2035-1)).
Applying the patch Security Update 2014-002 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at support.apple.com. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. The advisory contains the following remark:
This issue was addressed through additional validation of floating point values.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (71472), SecurityFocus (BID 62442†), OSVDB (100113†), Secunia (SA55787†) and SecurityTracker (ID 1030133†).
