Ruby up to 2.0.0 Fiddle / DL modules $SAFE access control

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, was found in Ruby up to 2.0.0 (Programming Language Software). This affects an unknown functionality of the component Fiddle / DL modules. The manipulation of the argument $SAFE as part of a Eingabe leads to a access control vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-264. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, and integrity. The summary by CVE is:

(1) DL and (2) Fiddle in Ruby 1.9 before 1.9.3 patchlevel 426, and 2.0 before 2.0.0 patchlevel 195, do not perform taint checking for native functions, which allows context-dependent attackers to bypass intended $SAFE level restrictions.

The weakness was released 05/14/2013 by Vit Ondruch as not defined advisory (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at ruby-lang.org. The public release was coordinated with the project team. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2013-2065 since 02/19/2013. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1068 according to MITRE ATT&CK.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 70684 (Puppet Enterprise < 3.1.0 Multiple Vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CGI abuses. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 195876 (Ubuntu Security Notification for Ruby1.8, Ruby1.9.1 Vulnerabilities (USN-2035-1)).

Upgrading to version 2.0.0 195 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
