A vulnerability has been found in WordPress 3.2.7 (Content Management System) and classified as problematic. This vulnerability affects some unknown functionality of the file wp-content/plugins/newsletter/subscription/page.php of the component Newsletter Plugin. The manipulation of the argument alert with an unknown input leads to a cross site scripting vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-79. Cross-site scripting (XSS) vulnerability in Plupload.as in Moxiecode plupload before 1.5.5, as used in WordPress before 3.5.1 and other products, allows remote attackers to inject arbitrary web script or HTML via the id parameter.
The bug was discovered 05/09/2013. The weakness was disclosed 05/14/2013 by Gjoko Krstic (LiquidWorm) with Zero Science Lab as File 121634 as confirmed exploit (Packetstorm). The advisory is shared for download at packetstormsecurity.com. The public release has been coordinated in cooperation with the vendor. This vulnerability was named CVE-2013-0237 since 12/06/2012. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be initiated remotely. A single authentication is required for exploitation. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. Technical details and also a public exploit are known. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1059.007.
After immediately, there has been an exploit disclosed. It is possible to download the exploit at zeroscience.mk. It is declared as highly functional. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 1 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. By approaching the search of inurl:wp-content/plugins/newsletter/subscription/page.php it is possible to find vulnerable targets with Google Hacking. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 64288 (FreeBSD : wordpress -- multiple vulnerabilities (559e00b7-6a4d-11e2-b6b0-10bf48230856)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family FreeBSD Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 13205 (WordPress Versions Prior to 3.5.1 Multiple Vulnerabilities).
Upgrading to version 3.2.7 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at plugins.svn.wordpress.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published before and not just after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
