A vulnerability classified as critical was found in WordPress 3.5.0 (Content Management System). This vulnerability affects an unknown functionality of the component Shortcodes/Post Content Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a server-side request forgery vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-918. The web server receives a URL or similar request from an upstream component and retrieves the contents of this URL, but it does not sufficiently ensure that the request is being sent to the expected destination. The XMLRPC API in WordPress before 3.5.1 allows remote attackers to send HTTP requests to intranet servers, and conduct port-scanning attacks, by specifying a crafted source URL for a pingback, related to a Server-Side Request Forgery (SSRF) issue.
The weakness was presented 01/24/2013 by Jon Cave (duck) with WordPress Security Team as WordPress 3.5.1 Maintenance and Security Release as confirmed blog post (Website). The advisory is available at wordpress.org. The public release was coordinated in cooperation with the vendor. This vulnerability was named CVE-2013-0235 since 12/06/2012. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. Technical details are unknown but a private exploit is available.
A private exploit has been developed by Jon Cave (duck). It is declared as proof-of-concept. As 0-day the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 64453 (WordPress 'xmlrpc.php' pingback.ping Server-Side Request Forgery), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CGI abuses. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 13205 (WordPress Versions Prior to 3.5.1 Multiple Vulnerabilities).
Upgrading to version 3.5.1 eliminates this vulnerability. The upgrade is hosted for download at wordpress.org. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
