A vulnerability was found in Apple Mac OS X 10.9.2 (Operating System). It has been classified as critical. Affected is an unknown code of the component Ruby. The manipulation as part of a YAML Tag leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. The yaml_parser_scan_tag_uri function in scanner.c in LibYAML before 0.1.5 performs an incorrect cast, which allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (application crash) and possibly execute arbitrary code via crafted tags in a YAML document, which triggers a heap-based buffer overflow.
The weakness was presented 04/22/2014 by Florian Weimer with Red Hat Security Response Team as HT6207 as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is available at support.apple.com. The public release was coordinated in cooperation with the vendor. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2013-6393 since 11/04/2013. The exploitability is told to be difficult. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not available. The advisory points out:
Running a Ruby script that handles untrusted YAML tags may lead to an unexpected application termination or arbitrary code execution
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 75296 (openSUSE Security Update : libyaml (openSUSE-SU-2014:0381-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family SuSE Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 350775 (Amazon Linux Security Advisory for perl-YAML-LibYAML: AL2012-2015-056).
Applying the patch Security Update 2014-002 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at support.apple.com. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. The advisory contains the following remark:
This issue was addressed through additional validation of YAML tags. This issue does not affect systems prior to OS X Mavericks.
