The Intel Graphics Driver in Apple OS X through 10.9.2 does not properly validate a certain pointer, which allows attackers to execute arbitrary code via a crafted application.

The weakness was shared 04/22/2014 by Ian Beer with Google Project Zero as HT6207 as confirmed advisory (Website) via Zero Day Initiative (ZDI). The advisory is available at support.apple.com. The vendor cooperated in the coordination of the public release. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2014-1318 since 01/08/2014. The exploitation is known to be difficult. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not available. The advisory points out:

A validation issue existed in the handling of a pointer from userspace.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 73648 (Mac OS X Multiple Vulnerabilities (Security Update 2014-002)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family MacOS X Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 122028 (Apple Mac OS X Security Update 2014-002 Not Installed (HT6207)).

Applying the patch Security Update 2014-002 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at support.apple.com. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. The advisory contains the following remark:

This issue was addressed through improved bounds checking. This issue does not affect systems prior to OS X Mavericks.
