Details
A vulnerability has been found in OpenSSH 7.9 (Connectivity Software) and classified as critical. Affected by this vulnerability is the function refresh_progress_meter of the file progressmeter.c of the component Encoding. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a access control vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-284. The product does not restrict or incorrectly restricts access to a resource from an unauthorized actor. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
An issue was discovered in OpenSSH 7.9. Due to missing character encoding in the progress display, a malicious server (or Man-in-The-Middle attacker) can employ crafted object names to manipulate the client output, e.g., by using ANSI control codes to hide additional files being transferred. This affects refresh_progress_meter() in progressmeter.c.
The bug was discovered 01/11/2019. The weakness was shared 01/31/2019 by Harry Sintonen (Website). The advisory is shared at cvsweb.openbsd.org. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2019-6109 since 01/10/2019. The exploitation appears to be difficult. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1068 for this issue.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 7 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 121296 (SUSE SLED15 / SLES15 Security Update : openssh (SUSE-SU-2019:0126-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.
