A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, has been found in Linux Kernel up to 4.9.2 (Operating System). This issue affects an unknown part of the file fs/xfs/xfs_aops.c of the component IO Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a race condition vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-362. The product contains a code sequence that can run concurrently with other code, and the code sequence requires temporary, exclusive access to a shared resource, but a timing window exists in which the shared resource can be modified by another code sequence that is operating concurrently. In the Linux kernel before 4.9.3, fs/xfs/xfs_aops.c allows local users to cause a denial of service (system crash) because there is a race condition between direct and memory-mapped I/O (associated with a hole) that is handled with BUG_ON instead of an I/O failure.
The bug was discovered 11/08/2016. The weakness was published 02/01/2019 (Website). The advisory is shared at git.kernel.org. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2016-10741 since 02/01/2019. An attack has to be approached locally. A simple authentication is necessary for exploitation. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 815 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. Upgrading to version 4.9.3 eliminates this vulnerability.
