This issue affects an unknown part of the file fs/xfs/xfs_aops.c of the component IO Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a race condition vulnerability. In the Linux kernel before 4.9.3, fs/xfs/xfs_aops.c allows local users to cause a denial of service (system crash) because there is a race condition between direct and memory-mapped I/O (associated with a hole) that is handled with BUG_ON instead of an I/O failure.

The bug was discovered 11/08/2016. The weakness was published 02/01/2019 (Website). The advisory is shared at git.kernel.org. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2016-10741 since 02/01/2019. An attack has to be approached locally. A simple authentication is necessary for exploitation.
