Apple iOS up to 7.1 CFNetwork HTTPProtocol access control

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, was found in Apple iOS up to 7.1 (Smartphone Operating System). Affected is an unknown part of the component CFNetwork HTTPProtocol Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a access control vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-264. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality. CVE summarizes:

CFNetwork in Apple iOS before 7.1.1, Apple OS X through 10.9.2, and Apple TV before 6.1.1 does not ensure that a Set-Cookie HTTP header is complete before interpreting the header's value, which allows remote attackers to bypass intended access restrictions by triggering the closing of a TCP connection during transmission of a header, as demonstrated by an HTTPOnly restriction.

The weakness was shared 04/22/2014 by Antoine Delignat-Lavaud with Google as HT6208 as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is shared for download at support.apple.com. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2014-1296 since 01/08/2014. The exploitability is told to be difficult. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available. The current price for an exploit might be approx. USD $0-$5k (estimation calculated on 05/11/2026). It is expected to see the exploit prices for this product increasing in the near future. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1068. The advisory points out:

Set-Cookie HTTP headers would be processed even if the connection closed before the header line was complete. An attacker could strip security settings from the cookie by forcing the connection to close before the security settings were sent, and then obtain the value of the unprotected cookie.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 74040 (Apple iTunes < 11.2 Multiple Vulnerabilities (credentialed check)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 122028 (Apple Mac OS X Security Update 2014-002 Not Installed (HT6207)).

Upgrading to version 7.1.1 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. The advisory contains the following remark:

This issue was addressed by ignoring incomplete HTTP header lines.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (74040), SecurityFocus (BID 67024†) and Secunia (SA58140†). The entries VDB-10903, VDB-12773, VDB-12772 and VDB-12771 are related to this item. Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
