A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, has been found in libarchive 2.8.0 (File Compression Software). This issue affects the function read_CE/parse_rockridge of the file archive_read_support_format_iso9660.c. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a resource consumption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-400. The product does not properly control the allocation and maintenance of a limited resource, thereby enabling an actor to influence the amount of resources consumed, eventually leading to the exhaustion of available resources. libarchive version commit 5a98dcf8a86364b3c2c469c85b93647dfb139961 onwards (version v2.8.0 onwards) contains a CWE-835: Loop with Unreachable Exit Condition ('Infinite Loop') vulnerability in ISO9660 parser, archive_read_support_format_iso9660.c, read_CE()/parse_rockridge() that can result in DoS by infinite loop. This attack appears to be exploitable via the victim opening a specially crafted ISO9660 file.
The bug was discovered 02/07/2019. The weakness was published 02/04/2019 (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at lists.fedoraproject.org. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2019-1000020 since 02/04/2019. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1499 according to MITRE ATT&CK.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 209710 (F5 Networks BIG-IP : libarchive vulnerabilities (K000148255)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 197368 (Ubuntu Security Notification for Libarchive Vulnerabilities (USN-3884-1)).
