A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, has been found in LibRaw up to 0.19.0 (Image Processing Software). This issue affects the function parse_sinar_ia of the file internal/dcraw_common.cpp. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a resource consumption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-400. The product does not properly control the allocation and maintenance of a limited resource, thereby enabling an actor to influence the amount of resources consumed, eventually leading to the exhaustion of available resources. An error within the "parse_sinar_ia()" function (internal/dcraw_common.cpp) within LibRaw versions prior to 0.19.1 can be exploited to exhaust available CPU resources.
The bug was discovered 12/13/2018. The weakness was released 02/20/2019 (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at lists.debian.org. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2018-5819 since 01/19/2018. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit. Upgrading to version 0.19.1 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
