Details
A vulnerability classified as problematic was found in Wireshark (Packet Analyzer Software). This vulnerability affects some unknown processing of the file epan/dissectors/asn1/tcap/tcap.cnf of the component TCAP Dissector. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a null pointer dereference vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-476. A NULL pointer dereference occurs when the application dereferences a pointer that it expects to be valid, but is NULL, typically causing a crash or exit. As an impact it is known to affect availability. CVE summarizes:
In Wireshark 2.4.0 to 2.4.12 and 2.6.0 to 2.6.6, the TCAP dissector could crash. This was addressed in epan/dissectors/asn1/tcap/tcap.cnf by avoiding NULL pointer dereferences.
The bug was discovered 02/27/2019. The weakness was shared 02/28/2019 by Mateusz Jurczyk (OSS-Fuzz) (Website). The advisory is shared for download at securityfocus.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2019-9208 since 02/26/2019. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 1 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 371670 (Wireshark Multiple Vulnerabilities (wnpa-sec-2019-06 to wnpa-sec-2019-08)).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch 3d1b8004ed3a07422ca5d4e4ee8097150b934fd2 is able to eliminate this problem. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
