A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, was found in Wireshark (Packet Analyzer Software). Affected is an unknown functionality of the file epan/dissectors/packet-rpcap.c of the component RPCAP Dissector. The manipulation as part of a Packet leads to a null pointer dereference vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-476. A NULL pointer dereference occurs when the application dereferences a pointer that it expects to be valid, but is NULL, typically causing a crash or exit. In Wireshark 2.4.0 to 2.4.12 and 2.6.0 to 2.6.6, the RPCAP dissector could crash. This was addressed in epan/dissectors/packet-rpcap.c by avoiding an attempted dereference of a NULL conversation.
The weakness was released 02/28/2019. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2019-9214 since 02/27/2019. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit.
The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 371670 (Wireshark Multiple Vulnerabilities (wnpa-sec-2019-06 to wnpa-sec-2019-08)).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability.
