A vulnerability was found in Vixie cron up to 3.0. It has been declared as problematic. This vulnerability affects some unknown processing of the component Crontab File Handler. Vixie Cron before the 3.0pl1-133 Debian package allows local users to cause a denial of service (memory consumption) via a large crontab file because an unlimited number of lines is accepted.

The bug was discovered 03/08/2019. The weakness was presented 03/12/2019 by Florian Weimer (Website). The advisory is available at securityfocus.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2019-9705 since 03/11/2019. Local access is required to approach this attack. Required for exploitation is a single authentication. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not available.

The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 4 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 176701 (Debian Security Update for cron (DLA 1723-1)).

Upgrading to version 3.0pl1-133 eliminates this vulnerability.
