A vulnerability was found in Vixie cron up to 3.0. It has been rated as problematic. This issue affects the function force_rescan_user. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a use after free vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-416. Referencing memory after it has been freed can cause a program to crash, use unexpected values, or execute code. Impacted is availability. The summary by CVE is:
Vixie Cron before the 3.0pl1-133 Debian package allows local users to cause a denial of service (use-after-free and daemon crash) because of a force_rescan_user error.
The bug was discovered 12/27/2015. The weakness was shared 03/12/2019 by Florian Weimer (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at lists.debian.org. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2019-9706 since 03/11/2019. Attacking locally is a requirement. The successful exploitation requires a simple authentication. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 1171 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 176701 (Debian Security Update for cron (DLA 1723-1)).
Upgrading to version 3.0pl1-133 eliminates this vulnerability.
