Details
A vulnerability classified as problematic was found in Debian dpkg 1.15.9. This vulnerability affects an unknown functionality of the component File Name Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a path traversal vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-22. The product uses external input to construct a pathname that is intended to identify a file or directory that is located underneath a restricted parent directory, but the product does not properly neutralize special elements within the pathname that can cause the pathname to resolve to a location that is outside of the restricted directory. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality. CVE summarizes:
dpkg 1.17.x before 1.17.9, 1.16.x before 1.16.14, and 1.15.x before 1.15.10 for Debian squeeze and wheezy supports "C-style encoded filenames" while the patch program does not, which introduces an interaction error that allows attackers to conduct directory traversal attacks and create files outside of the intended directories via a crafted package. NOTE: this vulnerability exists because of an incorrect fix for CVE-2014-0471.
The issue has been introduced in 04/28/2014. The weakness was presented 04/28/2014 by Raphael Geissert with Debian as Bug #746306 as not defined bug report (Bug Tracker). The advisory is shared for download at bugs.debian.org. The public release was coordinated in cooperation with the vendor. This vulnerability was named CVE-2014-3127 since 04/29/2014. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack needs to be approached locally. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1006. The advisory points out:
The recent update of dpkg for CVE-2014-0471 in Debian squeeze (and possibly Ubuntu lucid) actually introduces a vulnerability in that release, while it was not affected by the original vulnerability.
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. The upgrade is hosted for download at anonscm.debian.org. A possible mitigation has been published 1 days after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (92997) and SecurityFocus (BID 67181†). See VDB-13404 for similar entry. VulDB is the best source for vulnerability data and more expert information about this specific topic.
