Ruby on Rails up to 3.2.17/4.0.4/4.1.0 Implicit Render render_implicit_action_test.rb path traversal

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in Ruby on Rails up to 3.2.17/4.0.4/4.1.0 (Programming Language Software). This issue affects some unknown functionality of the file render_implicit_action_test.rb of the component Implicit Render Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a path traversal vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-22. The product uses external input to construct a pathname that is intended to identify a file or directory that is located underneath a restricted parent directory, but the product does not properly neutralize special elements within the pathname that can cause the pathname to resolve to a location that is outside of the restricted directory. Impacted is confidentiality. The summary by CVE is:

Directory traversal vulnerability in actionpack/lib/abstract_controller/base.rb in the implicit-render implementation in Ruby on Rails before 3.2.18, 4.0.x before 4.0.5, and 4.1.x before 4.1.1, when certain route globbing configurations are enabled, allows remote attackers to read arbitrary files via a crafted request.

The weakness was shared 05/06/2014 as Rails 3.2.18, 4.0.5 and 4.1.1 have been released! as confirmed release notes (Website). The advisory is shared at weblog.rubyonrails.org. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2014-0130 since 12/03/2013. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details as well as a exploit are known. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1006 for this issue.

It is declared as attacked. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 75375 (openSUSE Security Update : rubygem-actionpack-3_2 (openSUSE-SU-2014:0718-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family SuSE Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 123420 (Fedora Security Update for rubygem-actionpack (FEDORA-2014-15371)). The CISA Known Exploited Vulnerabilities Catalog lists this issue since 03/25/2022 with a due date of 04/15/2022:

Apply updates per vendor instructions.

Upgrading to version 3.2.18, 4.0.5 or 4.1.1 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at github.com. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. The release notes contains the following remark:

These three releases contain important security fix, so please upgrade as soon as possible! In order to make upgrading as smooth as possible, we've only included commits directly related to each security issue.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (93202), Tenable (75375), SecurityFocus (BID 67244†), OSVDB (106704†) and Secunia (SA58120†). The entries VDB-72908 and VDB-72858 are related to this item. Several companies clearly confirm that VulDB is the primary source for best vulnerability data.
