Details
A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, was found in Ruby on Rails (Programming Language Software). Affected is some unknown functionality in the library actionpack/lib/action_dispatch/middleware/static.rb of the component Assets. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a path traversal vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-22. The product uses external input to construct a pathname that is intended to identify a file or directory that is located underneath a restricted parent directory, but the product does not properly neutralize special elements within the pathname that can cause the pathname to resolve to a location that is outside of the restricted directory. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality. CVE summarizes:
Directory traversal vulnerability in actionpack/lib/action_dispatch/middleware/static.rb in Action Pack in Ruby on Rails 3.x before 3.2.20, 4.0.x before 4.0.11, 4.1.x before 4.1.7, and 4.2.x before 4.2.0.beta3, when serve_static_assets is enabled, allows remote attackers to determine the existence of files outside the application root via a /..%2F sequence.
The weakness was presented 11/08/2014 by Aaron (Website). The advisory is available at groups.google.com. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2014-7818 since 10/03/2014. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit. This vulnerability is assigned to T1006 by the MITRE ATT&CK project.
