Details
A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel 2.6.0/3.12 (Operating System) and classified as critical. Affected by this issue is the function raw_cmd_copyin of the file /drivers/block/floppy.c of the component Floppy Device Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a access control vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-264. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability.
The issue has been introduced in 12/18/2003. The weakness was published 04/28/2014 by Matthew Daley as floppy: ignore kernel-only members in FDRAWCMD ioctl input as confirmed git commit (GIT Repository). The advisory is available at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2014-1737 since 01/29/2014. The exploitation is known to be easy. Local access is required to approach this attack. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit. This vulnerability is assigned to T1068 by the MITRE ATT&CK project. The following code is the reason for this vulnerability:
if (ret) return -EFAULT;
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 3784 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 74049 (Fedora 20 : kernel-3.14.4-200.fc20 (2014-6357)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Fedora Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 167228 (SUSE Enterprise Linux Security Update for Linux Kernel (SUSE-SU-2014:0807-1)).
Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.kernel.org. A possible mitigation has been published 1 weeks after the disclosure of the vulnerability. The vulnerability will be addressed with the following lines of code:
ptr->kernel_data = NULL; if (ret) return -EFAULT;
