Details
A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, was found in Das U-Boot up to 2014.07-rc2. This affects an unknown functionality of the component Verified Boot Protection. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a signature verification vulnerability (Kernel). CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-347. The product does not verify, or incorrectly verifies, the cryptographic signature for data. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
An exploitable vulnerability exists in the verified boot protection of the Das U-Boot from version 2013.07-rc1 to 2014.07-rc2. The affected versions lack proper FIT signature enforcement, which allows an attacker to bypass U-Boot's verified boot and execute an unsigned kernel, embedded in a legacy image format. To trigger this vulnerability, a local attacker needs to be able to supply the image to boot.
The bug was discovered 03/19/2019. The weakness was shared 03/21/2019. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2018-3968 since 01/02/2018. Attacking locally is a requirement. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available.
