Details
A vulnerability has been found in Python up to 2.7.16/3.7.2 (Programming Language Software) and classified as critical. Affected by this vulnerability is an unknown functionality in the library urllib.request.urlopen of the component urllib2. The manipulation as part of a Query String leads to a crlf injection vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-93. The product uses CRLF (carriage return line feeds) as a special element, e.g. to separate lines or records, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes CRLF sequences from inputs. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
An issue was discovered in urllib2 in Python 2.x through 2.7.16 and urllib in Python 3.x through 3.7.2. CRLF injection is possible if the attacker controls a url parameter, as demonstrated by the first argument to urllib.request.urlopen with \r\n (specifically in the query string or PATH_INFO) followed by an HTTP header or a Redis command. This is similar to CVE-2019-9740.
The bug was discovered 02/06/2019. The weakness was presented 03/23/2019 (Website). The advisory is shared at lists.fedoraproject.org. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2019-9947 since 03/23/2019. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 45 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 237346 (F5 Networks BIG-IP : Python urllib vulnerability (K000151516)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 237250 (Red Hat Update for python27-python and python27-python-jinja2 (RHSA-2019:1260)).
There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (237346) and SecurityFocus (BID 105396†). See VDB-109585, VDB-113041, VDB-119652 and VDB-119653 for similar entries. If you want to get the best quality for vulnerability data then you always have to consider VulDB.
