Details
A vulnerability was found in X.org libXfont. It has been classified as critical. Affected is some unknown functionality of the file fserve.c. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
Multiple buffer overflows in X.Org libXfont before 1.4.8 and 1.4.9x before 1.4.99.901 allow remote font servers to execute arbitrary code via a crafted xfs protocol reply to the (1) _fs_recv_conn_setup, (2) fs_read_open_font, (3) fs_read_query_info, (4) fs_read_extent_info, (5) fs_read_glyphs, (6) fs_read_list, or (7) fs_read_list_info function.
The weakness was presented 05/12/2014 by Huzaifa S. Sidhpurwala as Bug CVE-201 as confirmed bug report (Bugzilla). The advisory is available at bugzilla.redhat.com. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2014-0210 since 12/03/2013. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit. The advisory points out:
When parsing replies received from the font server, these calls do not check that the lengths and/or indexes returned by the font server are within the size of the reply or the bounds of the memory allocated to store the data, so could write past the bounds of allocated memory when storing the returned data.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 73997 (Debian DSA-2927-1 : libxfont - security update), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Debian Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 350325 (Amazon Linux Security Advisory for libXfont: ALAS-2014-404).
Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at cgit.freedesktop.org. A possible mitigation has been published 1 days after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (93145), Tenable (73997), SecurityFocus (BID 67382†), Secunia (SA58474†) and SecurityTracker (ID 1030238†).
