Details
A vulnerability was found in X.org libXfont. It has been declared as critical. Affected by this vulnerability is the function fs_get_reply/fs_alloc_glyphs/fs_read_extent_info of the file fserve.c. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a numeric error vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-189. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
Multiple integer overflows in the (1) fs_get_reply, (2) fs_alloc_glyphs, and (3) fs_read_extent_info functions in X.Org libXfont before 1.4.8 and 1.4.9x before 1.4.99.901 allow remote font servers to execute arbitrary code via a crafted xfs reply, which triggers a buffer overflow.
The weakness was shared 05/12/2014 by Huzaifa S. Sidhpurwala as Bug 1096601 as confirmed bug report (Bugzilla). It is possible to read the advisory at bugzilla.redhat.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2014-0211 since 12/03/2013. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit. The advisory points out:
When parsing replies received from the font server, these calls do not check that their calculations for how much memory is needed to handle the returned data have not overflowed, so can result in allocating too little memory and then writing the returned data past the end of the allocated buffer.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 73997 (Debian DSA-2927-1 : libxfont - security update), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Debian Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 350808 (Amazon Linux Security Advisory for libXfont: AL2012-2015-023).
Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at cgit.freedesktop.org. A possible mitigation has been published 1 days after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
