A vulnerability was found in Apple tvOS up to 12.1.2 (Digital Media Player). It has been declared as critical. Affected by this vulnerability is an unknown function of the component WebKit. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability.
The bug was discovered 03/25/2019. The weakness was disclosed 03/25/2019 with Google Project Zero as HT209601 as confirmed advisory (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at support.apple.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2019-8558 since 02/18/2019. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available. The advisory points out:
Multiple memory corruption issues were addressed with improved memory handling.
It is possible to download the exploit at exploit-db.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 371711 (Apple Safari Multiple Vulnerabilities (HT209603)).
Upgrading to version 12.2 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
