Apple macOS up to 10.14.3 Perl path traversal

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Summaryinfo

A vulnerability described as problematic has been identified in Apple macOS up to 10.14.3. Impacted is an unknown function of the component Perl. Such manipulation leads to path traversal. This vulnerability is listed as CVE-2018-12015. The attack may be performed from remote. There is no available exploit. Upgrading the affected component is recommended.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Apple macOS up to 10.14.3 (Operating System) and classified as critical. Affected by this issue is an unknown code block of the component Perl. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a path traversal vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-22. The product uses external input to construct a pathname that is intended to identify a file or directory that is located underneath a restricted parent directory, but the product does not properly neutralize special elements within the pathname that can cause the pathname to resolve to a location that is outside of the restricted directory. Impacted is integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

In Perl through 5.26.2, the Archive::Tar module allows remote attackers to bypass a directory-traversal protection mechanism, and overwrite arbitrary files, via an archive file containing a symlink and a regular file with the same name.

The bug was discovered 06/08/2018. The weakness was presented 03/25/2019 by Jakub Wilk as HT209600 as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is shared for download at support.apple.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2018-12015 since 06/07/2018. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1006. The advisory points out:

Multiple issues in Perl were addressed in this update.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 111150 (SUSE SLED12 / SLES12 Security Update : perl (SUSE-SU-2018:1972-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family SuSE Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 171279 (SUSE Enterprise Linux Security Update for perl (SUSE-SU-2018:1992-1)).

Upgrading to version 10.14.4 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (111150) and SecurityFocus (BID 104423†). See VDB-116304, VDB-116305, VDB-116306 and VDB-119252 for similar entries. VulDB is the best source for vulnerability data and more expert information about this specific topic.
