A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in Apple iTunes up to 12.9.3 on Windows (Multimedia Player Software). This issue affects some unknown processing of the component WebKit. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability.
The bug was discovered 03/25/2019. The weakness was presented 03/25/2019 with Google Project Zero as HT209604 as confirmed advisory (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at support.apple.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2019-8518 since 02/18/2019. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available. Multiple memory corruption issues were addressed with improved memory handling.
The exploit is available at exploit-db.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. We expect the 0-day to have been worth approximately $5k-$25k. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 371711 (Apple Safari Multiple Vulnerabilities (HT209603)).
