Details
A vulnerability was found in Apple iTunes up to 11.1 on Windows (Multimedia Player Software). It has been declared as problematic. This vulnerability affects some unknown functionality of the component Set-Cookie Header Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a access control vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-264. As an impact it is known to affect integrity. CVE summarizes:
CFNetwork in Apple iOS before 7.1.1, Apple OS X through 10.9.2, and Apple TV before 6.1.1 does not ensure that a Set-Cookie HTTP header is complete before interpreting the header's value, which allows remote attackers to bypass intended access restrictions by triggering the closing of a TCP connection during transmission of a header, as demonstrated by an HTTPOnly restriction.
The weakness was released 05/15/2014 as HT6245 as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is available at support.apple.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2014-1296 since 01/08/2014. The exploitation appears to be difficult. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not available. This vulnerability is assigned to T1068 by the MITRE ATT&CK project. The advisory points out:
Set-Cookie HTTP headers would be processed even if the connection closed before the header line was complete. An attacker could strip security settings from the cookie by forcing the connection to close before the security settings were sent, and then obtain the value of the unprotected cookie.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 74040 (Apple iTunes < 11.2 Multiple Vulnerabilities (credentialed check)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 122028 (Apple Mac OS X Security Update 2014-002 Not Installed (HT6207)).
Upgrading to version 11.2 eliminates this vulnerability. The upgrade is hosted for download at apple.com. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. The advisory contains the following remark:
This issue was addressed by ignoring incomplete HTTP header lines.
