libvirtd up to 4.x QEMU Agent null pointer dereference

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in libvirtd up to 4.x (Virtualization Software) and classified as problematic. Affected by this issue is an unknown part of the component QEMU Agent. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a null pointer dereference vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-476. A NULL pointer dereference occurs when the application dereferences a pointer that it expects to be valid, but is NULL, typically causing a crash or exit. Impacted is availability. CVE summarizes:

A NULL pointer dereference flaw was discovered in libvirt before version 5.0.0 in the way it gets interface information through the QEMU agent. An attacker in a guest VM can use this flaw to crash libvirtd and cause a denial of service.

The bug was discovered 04/11/2019. The weakness was presented 03/27/2019 as Bug 1663051 as confirmed bug report (Bugzilla). The advisory is shared for download at bugzilla.redhat.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2019-3840 since 01/03/2019. The attack may be launched remotely. A simple authentication is necessary for exploitation. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available.

The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 172276 (SUSE Enterprise Linux Security Update for libvirt (SUSE-SU-2019:0948-1)).

Upgrading to version 5.0.0 eliminates this vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the vulnerability database at SecurityFocus (BID 107777†). See VDB-133057 and VDB-135361 for similar entries. Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
