A vulnerability was found in libvirtd up to 4.x (Virtualization Software) and classified as problematic. Affected by this issue is an unknown part of the component QEMU Agent. A NULL pointer dereference flaw was discovered in libvirt before version 5.0.0 in the way it gets interface information through the QEMU agent. An attacker in a guest VM can use this flaw to crash libvirtd and cause a denial of service.
The bug was discovered 04/11/2019. The weakness was presented 03/27/2019 as Bug 1663051 as confirmed bug report (Bugzilla). The advisory is shared for download at bugzilla.redhat.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2019-3840 since 01/03/2019. The attack may be launched remotely. A simple authentication is necessary for exploitation. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available.
The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 172276 (SUSE Enterprise Linux Security Update for libvirt (SUSE-SU-2019:0948-1)).
Upgrading to version 5.0.0 eliminates this vulnerability.
