A vulnerability has been found in GnuTLS up to 3.6.7 (Network Encryption Software) and classified as critical. Affected by this vulnerability is some unknown functionality of the component Certificate Verification. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a double free vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-415. The product calls free() twice on the same memory address, potentially leading to modification of unexpected memory locations. A vulnerability was found in gnutls versions from 3.5.8 before 3.6.7. A memory corruption (double free) vulnerability in the certificate verification API. Any client or server application that verifies X.509 certificates with GnuTLS 3.5.8 or later is affected.
The bug was discovered 02/04/2019. The weakness was disclosed 03/27/2019 by Amir as confirmed bug report (Bugzilla). It is possible to read the advisory at bugzilla.redhat.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2019-3829 since 01/03/2019. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 51 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 277785 (Fedora Security Update for gnutls (FEDORA-2019-e8c1cf958f)).
Upgrading to version 3.5.8 eliminates this vulnerability.
