Details
A vulnerability was found in GnuTLS (Network Encryption Software) (version now known). It has been declared as critical. This vulnerability affects some unknown processing of the component HMAC-SHA-384. The manipulation as part of a Crafted Packet leads to a cryptographic issue vulnerability (Lucky Thirteen). The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-310. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
It was found that the GnuTLS implementation of HMAC-SHA-384 was vulnerable to a Lucky thirteen style attack. Remote attackers could use this flaw to conduct distinguishing attacks and plain text recovery attacks via statistical analysis of timing data using crafted packets.
The bug was discovered 08/21/2018. The weakness was released 08/22/2018 by Amir as confirmed bug report (Bugzilla). The advisory is shared for download at bugzilla.redhat.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2018-10845 since 05/09/2018. The exploitation appears to be difficult. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1600.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 1 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 117702 (SUSE SLED12 / SLES12 Security Update : gnutls (SUSE-SU-2018:2842-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family SuSE Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 157840 (Oracle Enterprise Linux Security Update for gnutls (ELSA-2018-3050)).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 2 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
