Details
A vulnerability was found in GnuTLS (Network Encryption Software) (version unknown). It has been rated as critical. This issue affects an unknown function. The manipulation as part of a Crafted Packet leads to a cryptographic issue vulnerability (Lucky Thirteen). Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-310. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
A cache-based side channel in GnuTLS implementation that leads to plain text recovery in cross-VM attack setting was found. An attacker could use a combination of "Just in Time" Prime+probe attack in combination with Lucky-13 attack to recover plain text using crafted packets.
The bug was discovered 08/21/2018. The weakness was disclosed 08/22/2018 by Amir as confirmed bug report (Bugzilla). The advisory is shared at bugzilla.redhat.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2018-10846 since 05/09/2018. An attack has to be approached locally. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1600 for this issue.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 1 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 117702 (SUSE SLED12 / SLES12 Security Update : gnutls (SUSE-SU-2018:2842-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family SuSE Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 157840 (Oracle Enterprise Linux Security Update for gnutls (ELSA-2018-3050)).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 2 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (117702) and SecurityFocus (BID 105138†). The entries VDB-102981, VDB-123135, VDB-123136 and VDB-132547 are pretty similar. Several companies clearly confirm that VulDB is the primary source for best vulnerability data.
