not validate or incorrectly validates that the input has the
properties that are required to process the data safely and
correctly. As an impact it is known to affect availability. The summary by CVE is:
The LLDP implementation in Cisco IOS allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (device reload) via a malformed packet, aka Bug ID CSCum96282.
The weakness was published 05/19/2014 with Cisco as CSCum96282 as confirmed security notice (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at tools.cisco.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2014-3273 since 05/07/2014. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack needs to be initiated within the local network. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available. The advisory points out:
The vulnerability is due to incorrect handling of malformed LLDP packets. An attacker could exploit this vulnerability by sending a malformed LLDP packet destined to a switch when LLDP is enabled on an affected device. An exploit could allow the attacker to cause a reload of the affected device.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 74147 (Cisco IOS LLDP Request Processing DoS), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CISCO. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 43048 (Cisco IOS Link Layer Discovery Protocol Denial of Service Vulnerability).
Upgrading to version 15.4(2.4)T, 15.4(2.11)S, 15.4(3.1)XEB, 15.4(3.6)PIB25, 15.2(1)IC273.53 or 15.1(2)IC66.1 eliminates this vulnerability. The upgrade is hosted for download at software.cisco.com.
