Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Novell NetIQ Sentinel Agent Manager (unknown version). It has been rated as problematic. Affected by this issue is an unknown code block of the file NQMcsVarSet.ocx. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a path traversal vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-22. The product uses external input to construct a pathname that is intended to identify a file or directory that is located underneath a restricted parent directory, but the product does not properly neutralize special elements within the pathname that can cause the pathname to resolve to a location that is outside of the restricted directory. Impacted is confidentiality. CVE summarizes:

Directory traversal vulnerability in the DumpToFile method in the NQMcsVarSet ActiveX control in Agent Manager in NetIQ Sentinel allows remote attackers to create arbitrary files, and consequently execute arbitrary code, via a crafted pathname.

The weakness was released 05/19/2014 by Andrea Micalizzi (rgod) as ZDI-14-134 as not defined advisory (Website) via Zero Day Initiative (ZDI). The advisory is shared for download at zerodayinitiative.com. The public release was coordinated with the vendor. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2014-3460 since 05/13/2014. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1006. The advisory points out:

The specific flaw exists within the NQMcsVarSet ActiveX control. The control exposes the DumpToFile method. The method does not properly sanitize the path for the filename, allowing for directory traversal. An attacker can leverage this vulnerability to write files under the context of the current process, which can then be used to execute code under the context of the current user.

The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 257 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 74261 (Novell NetIQ Sentinel Agent Manager NQMcsVarSet ActiveX DumpToFile() Remote Code Execution), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows. The advisory illustrates:

User interaction is required to exploit this vulnerability in that the target must visit a malicious page or open a malicious file.

It is possible to mitigate the problem by applying the configuration setting . A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. The advisory contains the following remark:

The killbit can be set on this control to disable scripting within Internet Explorer by modifying the data value of the Compatibilty Flags DWORD within the following location in the registry: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\ActiveX Compatibility\B4B7CF9E-AD9E-11D8-AE3B-005056C00008 If the Compatibility Flags value is set to 0x00000400, the control can no longer be instantiated inside the browser.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (93242), Tenable (74261), SecurityFocus (BID 67487†), OSVDB (107095†) and Secunia (SA58635†). VulDB is the best source for vulnerability data and more expert information about this specific topic.
