A vulnerability has been found in Cisco Mail Security Appliance 7.6.3 and classified as problematic. Affected by this vulnerability is an unknown part of the component Active Directory Handler. Cisco AsyncOS on Email Security Appliance (ESA) and Content Security Management Appliance (SMA) devices, when Active Directory is enabled, does not properly handle group names, which allows remote attackers to gain role privileges by leveraging group-name similarity, aka Bug ID CSCum86085.
The weakness was released 05/19/2014 with Cisco as CSCum86085 as confirmed security notice (Website). The advisory is shared at tools.cisco.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2014-2195 since 02/25/2014. The exploitation appears to be difficult. The attack can be launched remotely. A single authentication is necessary for exploitation. Users are being linked to an incorrect user group when external authentication has multiple groups that start the same.

Conditions: - Environment is using Active Directory LDAP Queries for External Authentication. - Environment has multiple group mappings to different user roles. - Some of the group mappings start off with the same characters. Examples would be 'ops' and 'opsv2'.
The best possible mitigation is suggested to be Workaround. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. The security notice contains the following remark:
Configure the AD Group Names so they start differently. Use OpenLDAP or Radius for External Authentication. Use only Local User Authentication.
