Details
A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, was found in Fabrice Bellard QEMU up to 1.7.1 (Virtualization Software). This affects the function virtio_load of the file virtio/virtio.c of the component State Loader. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a code injection vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-94. The product constructs all or part of a code segment using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify the syntax or behavior of the intended code segment. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
The virtio_load function in virtio/virtio.c in QEMU 1.x before 1.7.2 allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via a crafted savevm image, which triggers an out-of-bounds write.
The weakness was shared 02/18/2014 by Petr Matousek as Bug 1066342 as confirmed bug report (Bugzilla). The advisory is shared at bugzilla.redhat.com. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2013-4151 since 06/12/2013. The exploitability is told to be easy. An attack has to be approached locally. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1059 for this issue. The reason for this vulnerability is this part of code:
num = qemu_get_be32(f);
for (i = 0; i < num; i++) {
vdev->vq[i].vring.num = qemu_get_be32(f);The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 74047 (Fedora 20 : qemu-1.6.2-5.fc20 (2014-6288)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Fedora Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 157057 (Oracle Enterprise Linux Security Update for qemu-kvm (ELSA-2015-0349)).
Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.qemu.org. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (93226), Tenable (74047), SecurityFocus (BID 67483†), OSVDB (106036†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-45698†).
