A vulnerability was found in VMware ESXi, Fusion and Workstation (Virtualization Software) (affected version unknown). It has been classified as critical. This affects an unknown functionality of the component Virtual USB 1.1 UHCI. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. VMware ESXi (6.7 before ESXi670-201903001, 6.5 before ESXi650-201903001, 6.0 before ESXi600-201903001), Workstation (15.x before 15.0.4, 14.x before 14.1.7), Fusion (11.x before 11.0.3, 10.x before 10.1.6) contain an out-of-bounds read/write vulnerability in the virtual USB 1.1 UHCI (Universal Host Controller Interface). Exploitation of this issue requires an attacker to have access to a virtual machine with a virtual USB controller present. This issue may allow a guest to execute code on the host.
The bug was discovered 03/28/2019. The weakness was presented 04/01/2019 by Richard Zhu with Fluoroacetate (Website). The advisory is shared at vmware.com. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2019-5518 since 01/07/2019. The exploitability is told to be easy. An attack has to be approached locally. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 4 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 371717 (VMware Workstation (14.x,15.x), Fusion (10.x,11.x) Out-of-Bounds Read/Write and TOCTOU Vulnerabilities (VMSA-2019-0005)).
