Fabrice Bellard QEMU 1.7.0 virtio_load code injection

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Summaryinfo

A vulnerability described as problematic has been identified in Fabrice Bellard QEMU 1.7.0. The impacted element is the function virtio_load. The manipulation results in code injection. This vulnerability is cataloged as CVE-2013-6399. There is no exploit available. It is advisable to implement a patch to correct this issue.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability classified as problematic has been found in Fabrice Bellard QEMU 1.7.0 (Virtualization Software). Affected is the function virtio_load. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a code injection vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-94. The product constructs all or part of a code segment using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify the syntax or behavior of the intended code segment. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

Array index error in the virtio_load function in hw/virtio/virtio.c in QEMU before 1.7.2 allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via a crafted savevm image.

The weakness was shared 02/18/2014 by Petr Matousek as Bug 1066361 as confirmed bug report (Bugzilla). The advisory is shared for download at bugzilla.redhat.com. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2013-6399 since 11/04/2013. The exploitability is told to be easy. The attack needs to be approached locally. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1059. The advisory points out:

vdev->queue_sel is read from the wire, and later used in the emulation code as an index into vdev->vq[]. If the value of vdev->queue_sel exceeds the length of vdev->vq[], currently allocated to be VIRTIO_PCI_QUEUE_MAX elements, subsequent PIO operations such as VIRTIO_PCI_QUEUE_PFN can be used to overrun the buffer with arbitrary data. An user able to alter the savevm data (either on the disk or over the wire during migration) could use this flaw to to corrupt QEMU process memory on the (destination) host, which could potentially result in arbitrary code execution on the host with the privileges of the QEMU process.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 74047 (Fedora 20 : qemu-1.6.2-5.fc20 (2014-6288)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Fedora Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 157057 (Oracle Enterprise Linux Security Update for qemu-kvm (ELSA-2015-0349)).

Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.qemu.org. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (93241), Tenable (74047), SecurityFocus (BID 67483†), OSVDB (106035†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-45701†). The entries VDB-13023, VDB-13254, VDB-13266 and VDB-13267 are related to this item. VulDB is the best source for vulnerability data and more expert information about this specific topic.
