Details
A vulnerability classified as problematic was found in Parsedown up to 1.7.1. This vulnerability affects an unknown function of the component Safe Mode. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a code injection vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-94. The product constructs all or part of a code segment using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify the syntax or behavior of the intended code segment. As an impact it is known to affect integrity. CVE summarizes:
Parsedown before 1.7.2, when safe mode is used and HTML markup is disabled, might allow attackers to execute arbitrary JavaScript code if a script (already running on the affected page) executes the contents of any element with a specific class. This occurs because spaces are permitted in code block infostrings, which interferes with the intended behavior of a single class name beginning with the language- substring.
The bug was discovered 03/17/2019. The weakness was shared 04/06/2019. This vulnerability was named CVE-2019-10905 since 04/06/2019. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1059.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 20 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k.
Upgrading to version 1.7.2 eliminates this vulnerability.
