Details
A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, has been found in Siemens SIMATIC S7-1500 CPU 2.0/2.1/2.2/2.3/2.4 (SCADA Software). Affected by this issue is some unknown functionality. The manipulation as part of a Network Packet leads to a input validation vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-20. The product receives input or data, but it does
not validate or incorrectly validates that the input has the
properties that are required to process the data safely and
correctly. Impacted is availability. CVE summarizes:
A vulnerability has been identified in SIMATIC S7-1500 CPU (All versions >= V2.0 and < V2.5), SIMATIC S7-1500 CPU (All versions <= V1.8.5). Specially crafted network packets sent to port 80/tcp or 443/tcp could allow an unauthenticated remote attacker to cause a Denial-of-Service condition of the device. The security vulnerability could be exploited by an attacker with network access to the affected systems on port 80/tcp or 443/tcp. Successful exploitation requires no system privileges and no user interaction. An attacker could use the vulnerability to compromise availability of the device. At the time of advisory publication no public exploitation of this security vulnerability was known.
The bug was discovered 02/05/2019. The weakness was released 04/17/2019. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2018-16558 since 09/06/2018. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 71 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k.
Upgrading to version 2.5 eliminates this vulnerability.Addressing this vulnerability is possible by firewalling tcp/80 & tcp/443. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
