Dovecot up to 1.2.15/2.1.15 IMAP4/POP3 SSL/TLS Handshake improper authentication

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability classified as problematic was found in Dovecot up to 1.2.15/2.1.15 (Mail Server Software). This vulnerability affects some unknown processing of the component IMAP4/POP3. The manipulation as part of a SSL/TLS Handshake leads to a improper authentication vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-287. When an actor claims to have a given identity, the product does not prove or insufficiently proves that the claim is correct. As an impact it is known to affect availability. CVE summarizes:

Dovecot 1.1 before 2.2.13 and dovecot-ee before 2.1.7.7 and 2.2.x before 2.2.12.12 does not properly close old connections, which allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (resource consumption) via an incomplete SSL/TLS handshake for an IMAP/POP3 connection.

The weakness was presented 05/11/2014 by Henri Salo as v2.2.13 released as not defined posting (Mailing List). The advisory is shared for download at dovecot.org. This vulnerability was named CVE-2014-3430 since 05/07/2014. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available. The advisory points out:

If SSL/TLS handshake was started but wasn't finished, the login process attempted to eventually forcibly disconnect the client, but failed to do it correctly. This could have left the connections hanging arond for a long time.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 74048 (Fedora 20 : dovecot-2.2.13-1.fc20 (2014-6338)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Fedora Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 122196 (Fedora Security Update for dovecot (FEDORA-2014-6331)).

Upgrading to version 2.2.13 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (93081), Tenable (74048), SecurityFocus (BID 67306†), Secunia (SA59051†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-44639†). Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
