Details
A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, has been found in cPanel 11.40.1.13/11.42.1.15/11.43.0.11 (Hosting Control Software). This issue affects the function Cpanel::Thirdparty::serviceinfo of the component Thirdparty Service Call Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a privileges management vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-269. The product does not properly assign, modify, track, or check privileges for an actor, creating an unintended sphere of control for that actor. Impacted is integrity.
The weakness was disclosed 05/26/2014 with cPanel as TSR-2014-2004 / Case 93021 as confirmed advisory (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at cpanel.net. The attack may be initiated remotely. A simple authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1068 according to MITRE ATT&CK. The advisory points out:
The Cpanel::Thirdparty::serviceinfo API1 call took a module name from the user and attempted to load it via an unsafe string eval. Using a carefully crafted module name, an authenticated cPanel user could execute arbitrary code, potentially bypassing other restrictions placed on the account.
Upgrading to version 11.40.1.14, 11.42.1.16 or 11.43.0.12 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
