A vulnerability was found in cPanel 11.40.1.13/11.42.1.15/11.43.0.11 (Hosting Control Software) and classified as problematic. This issue affects some unknown functionality of the component Locales ACL Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a privileges management vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-269. The product does not properly assign, modify, track, or check privileges for an actor, creating an unintended sphere of control for that actor. The weakness was shared 05/26/2014 with cPanel as TSR-2014-2004 / Case 98121 as confirmed advisory (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at cpanel.net. The attack may be initiated remotely. A simple authentication is required for exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1068 according to MITRE ATT&CK. The advisory points out:
The “local-edit” ACL listed in the WHM Edit Reseller Nameservers and Privileges interface was miscategorized under the “Global Privileges” grouping. This ACL should be listed under the “Super Privileges” grouping since the ACL allows the reseller to control the display of translations, including embedded HTML, in all cPanel & WHM interfaces.
Upgrading to version 11.40.1.14, 11.42.1.16 or 11.43.0.12 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
