Details
A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in cPanel 11.40.1.13/11.42.1.15/11.43.0.11 (Hosting Control Software). Affected by this issue is some unknown processing of the component DNS Clustering ACL Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a privileges management vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-269. The product does not properly assign, modify, track, or check privileges for an actor, creating an unintended sphere of control for that actor. Impacted is confidentiality, and integrity.
The weakness was released 05/26/2014 by Rack911 as TSR-2014-2004 / Case 97293 as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is shared for download at cpanel.net. The attack may be launched remotely. Required for exploitation is a simple authentication. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1068. The advisory points out:
The “Clustering” ACL in the WHM Edit Reseller Nameservers and Privileges interface was miscategorized under the “Standard Privileges” grouping. This ACL should be listed under the “Super Privileges” grouping since the ACL is intended for sensitive DNS clustering configuration and synchronization operations that bypass many restrictions on DNS zone modifications.
Upgrading to version 11.40.1.14, 11.42.1.16 or 11.43.0.12 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
