Details
A vulnerability was found in cPanel 11.40.1.13/11.42.1.15/11.43.0.11 (Hosting Control Software). It has been declared as problematic. This vulnerability affects the function safe_recchmod of the file chownpublichtmls of the component Permission Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a race condition vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-362. The product contains a code sequence that can run concurrently with other code, and the code sequence requires temporary, exclusive access to a shared resource, but a timing window exists in which the shared resource can be modified by another code sequence that is operating concurrently. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, and integrity.
The weakness was disclosed 05/26/2014 by Rack911 as TSR-2014-2004 / Case 96381 as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is shared for download at cpanel.net. The attack needs to be approached locally. A single authentication is required for exploitation. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available. The advisory points out:
The chownpublichtmls script is intended to correct the ownership on users’ public_html directories. This script used an obsolete version of the safe_recchmod() function that was vulnerable to a race condition attack. This could allow a local attacker change the ownership of arbitrary files.
Upgrading to version 11.40.1.14, 11.42.1.16 or 11.43.0.12 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
