Details
A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, was found in GNU Libtasn1 up to 3.5. This affects the function asn1_get_tag_der/_asn1_get_indefinite_length_string/asn1_der_decoding/asn1_der_decoding_startEnd/_asn1_extract_tag_der/_asn1_get_octet_string/_asn1_extract_der_octet/_asn1_get_time_der in the library lib/decoding.c. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a null pointer dereference vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-476. A NULL pointer dereference occurs when the application dereferences a pointer that it expects to be valid, but is NULL, typically causing a crash or exit. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
Multiple unspecified vulnerabilities in the DER decoder in GNU Libtasn1 before 3.6, as used in GnuTLS, allow remote attackers to cause a denial of service (out-of-bounds read) via crafted ASN.1 data.
The weakness was presented 05/25/2014 by Tomas Hoger as GNU Libtasn1 3.6 released as confirmed posting (Mailing List). The advisory is shared at lists.gnu.org. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2014-3467 since 05/14/2014. The exploitability is told to be difficult. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 74298 (Oracle Linux 6 : libtasn1 (ELSA-2014-0596)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Oracle Linux Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 167234 (SUSE Enterprise Linux Security Update for GnuTLS (SUSE-SU-2014:0788-1)).
Upgrading to version 3.6 eliminates this vulnerability. The upgrade is hosted for download at ftp.gnu.org. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be patching the affected component. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (93535), Tenable (74298), SecurityFocus (BID 67749†), Secunia (SA58379†) and SecurityTracker (ID 1030313†). See VDB-13407, VDB-13415 and VDB-13414 for similar entries. If you want to get the best quality for vulnerability data then you always have to consider VulDB.
