Details
A vulnerability was found in GNU Libtasn1 up to 3.5 and classified as problematic. This issue affects the function asn1_write_value/asn1_read_value_type/_asn1_convert_integer in the library lib/element.c. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a null pointer dereference vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-476. A NULL pointer dereference occurs when the application dereferences a pointer that it expects to be valid, but is NULL, typically causing a crash or exit. Impacted is availability. The summary by CVE is:
The (1) asn1_read_value_type and (2) asn1_read_value functions in GNU Libtasn1 before 3.6 allows context-dependent attackers to cause a denial of service (NULL pointer dereference and crash) via a NULL value in an ivalue argument.
The weakness was published 05/25/2014 as GNU Libtasn1 3.6 released as confirmed posting (Mailing List). It is possible to read the advisory at lists.gnu.org. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2014-3469 since 05/14/2014. The exploitation is known to be difficult. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 78302 (Amazon Linux AMI : libtasn1 (ALAS-2014-359)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Amazon Linux Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 350370 (Amazon Linux Security Advisory for libtasn1: ALAS-2014-359).
Upgrading to version 3.6 eliminates this vulnerability. The upgrade is hosted for download at ftp.gnu.org. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be patching the affected component. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (93538), Tenable (78302), SecurityFocus (BID 67748†), Secunia (SA58379†) and SecurityTracker (ID 1030313†).
