A flaw during verification of certain S/MIME signatures causes emails to be shown in Thunderbird as having a valid digital signature, even if the shown message contents aren't covered by the signature. The flaw allows an attacker to reuse a valid S/MIME signature to craft an email message with arbitrary content. This vulnerability affects Thunderbird < 60.5.1.

The bug was discovered 02/14/2019. The weakness was presented 04/26/2019 by Guang Gong with Qihoo 360 (Website). The advisory is shared at seclists.org. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2018-18509 since 10/19/2018. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available.
