A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in Mozilla Firefox, Firefox ESR and Thunderbird on Windows (Web Browser) (the affected version unknown). This issue affects an unknown part of the component Protocol Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a input validation vulnerability. Firefox will accept any registered Program ID as an external protocol handler and offer to launch this local application when given a matching URL on Windows operating systems. This should only happen if the program has specifically registered itself as a "URL Handler" in the Windows registry. *Note: This issue only affects Windows operating systems. Other operating systems are unaffected.*. This vulnerability affects Thunderbird < 60.6, Firefox ESR < 60.6, and Firefox < 66.
The bug was discovered 03/19/2019. The weakness was published 04/26/2019 by Guang Gong with Qihoo 360. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2019-9801 since 03/14/2019. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 38 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 172197 (SUSE Enterprise Linux Security Update for MozillaFirefox (SUSE-SU-2019:0852-1)).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability.
